What Is the Killala Round Tower

The Killala Round Tower was used as a watch tower during the invasion by the French in the 1798 rebellion. Placed on the hill of the town to give maximum height and views.

Killala centre which is very small town is situated up a little hill and at the top of this hill is the tall Killala round tower.

The Round Tower

This impressive structure was made from  limestone and standing at huge 25m tall. The tower was built in the 12th century and it is known to be the best of 5 towers in the County Mayo region. The door to this tower was placed at 13m from the ground to warn off possible invaders.

Located 20 minutes north of the town of Ballina in the North West of Ireland.
